Sexual satisfaction and relationship satisfaction in homosexual men

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Sexual satisfaction and satisfaction related to relationship, wherein sexual contacts are realized are described in the literature as closely correlated. Most of the studies to verify this relationship were conducted among heterosexual individuals and couples. The study was designed to examine the correlation between sexual satisfaction and relationship satisfaction in homosexual individuals.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved 27 men aged 19 to 33 years. Participants completed the two questionnaires: the Sexual Satisfaction Scale by D. Davies and the Satisfaction related to Relationship Scale by M. Acker and M. Davis.

RESULTS: Statistical analysis was based on correlation coefficients. Sexual satisfaction and satisfaction related to relationship appeared to be statistically correlated (r = 0.67, p ≤ 0.01). Detailed analysis of the results indicated different patterns of particular aspects of sexual satisfaction: physical satisfaction, satisfaction with a sense of control in sexual contacts, emotional satisfaction with various aspects of relationship satisfaction.

CONCLUSIONS: Our results are consistent with previous research results, both in general and in specific relationships. Correlations within specific aspects of sexual satisfaction were identified, indicating a closer link between physical satisfaction and satisfaction with the sense of control, and the relatively different pattern of emotional sexual satisfaction. The results require cautious interpretation due to the limitations of adopted procedure. They also highlight the importance of further research in sexually different groups.
