Sense of power and sexual satisfaction in intimate relationships

Abstract

Introduction. The aim of this research is to determine the relation between the personal sense of power and the sexual satisfaction, the attitude towards the relation between power and sexuality, the communal and exchange orientation in sexual relationships, sex and gender.

Material and methods. The research was conducted among a group of 163 people (84 female and 49 male). The mean age of the researched group was M = 29.9 (SD = 9.92). The research utilized: Sense of Power Scale, Power-Sexuality Relation Scale, Sexual Relationships Test and Sex Role Inventory.

Results. An upside correlation of sexual satisfaction and sense of power in a relationship with partner was found among women. The sense of power in relations with other people, family, friends and partner was found to significantly correlate with the communal orientation in sexual relationship. Among males the sexual satisfaction correlated with psychological femininity.

Conclusions. The power is important in intimate relationships. The results of the sexual satisfaction research might be used in practical fields such as couple therapy, sexual dysfunction therapy and psychotherapy.
