Honorary Members of the Polish Society of Nephrology. Part XV — Professor Zenon Szewczyk

Janusz Ostrowski, Marian Klinger, Bolesław Rutkowski
Forum Nefrologiczne 2016;9(3):210-214.

Abstract

The title of the Honorary Member is the highest-inrank distinction granted by the Polish Society of Nephrology (PTN) to both Polish and foreign researchers for their remarkable input in the development of Polish nephrology and the PTN itself. To date, a few dozen figures have received the title, and the profiles of 14 of them have already been presented by the authors in the series of publications commencing in 2013. This year, two professors: Kazimierz Bączyk of Poznań and France’s Raymond Ardaillou have been depicted. This issue is an attempt to present the outstanding Polish nephrologist from Wrocław, Professor Zenon Szewczyk, a successor of another brilliant Polish doctor, the Head of the first clinic of nephrology in Poland, and one of the first ones in Europe. Z. Szewczyk was one of the founding fathers of the PTN during the first congress held in Bydgoszcz in September 1983. His major scientific interest rested in the issues of assessment of the immune system efficiency in patients with glomerulonephritis and those subjected to a kidney transplant. The group of Z. Szewczyk’s students includes a number of remarkable figures of Polish nephrology, 8 of whom enjoy the title of a professor. The cooperation with Z. Szewczyk’s student and successor — professor Marian Klinger while working on this paper is, then, far from accidental.
