Abstract

Participation of sodium in the pathogenesis of arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis of cerebral and coronary arteries and pathogenesis of renal fibrosis seems to be well documented. The kidney are the main regulator of sodium metabolism, which is modulated by several factors. In the present paper the role of extrarenal sodium sensors located in the matrix of interstitial fluid space and vascular endothelial cells is briefly characterized.
