Abstract

Background The aim of presented analysis was to evaluate the antihypertensive efficacy of indapamide and its influence on the blood glucose and lipid profile.
Methods In this Polish open multicenter study indapamide 2,5 mg once daily was given 390 patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension for a period 14 weeks.
Results Pretreatment systolic blood pressure - SBP was 157,6 = 10,6 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure - DBP was 98,1 = 4,9 mmHg (mean = standard deviation). After 14 weeks of treatment SBP was 130,6 = 8,4 mmHg, DBP was 83,1 = 6,2 mmHg (p < 0,001).Total cholesterol and blood glucose were unchanged during indapamide therapy.
Conclusion Our study with indapamide as monotherapy shows that good blood pressure control was obtainded in patients with mild to moderate hypertension. Indapamide does not change metabolic profile.
