Modification of Endothelial Function — New Strategy of Antihypertensive Treatment

Włodzimierz Januszewicz, Marek Sznajderman
Nadciśnienie tętnicze 2000;4(3):195-200.

Abstract

Much attention has been paid recently to the influence of antihypertensive treatment on the endothelial structure and function. Many experiments and clinical data revealed the dysfuction of vascular endothelium in arterial hypertension, which may play an important role in the development of cardiovascular complications, especially of atherosclerotic origin. Recent studies showed the beneficial effect of antihypertensive drugs, particularly ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor antagonists which may be an important factor in the treatment of arterial hypertension.
This article summarizes recent views on the role of the dysfunction of vascular endothelium in the development of hypertension and the possibilities of its correction as well as its clinical implications.
