Abstract

Background Imbalance oxidative-antioxidative may play a role in the pathogenesis of some diseases. The aim of the was the evaluation of the lipid peroxidation products concentration and the evaluation of the activity of the antioxidant enzymes in patients with arterial hypertension.
Material and methods The study included 50 patients with essential arterial hypertension and 47 healthy controls. Patients were divided into 2 groups: I (28 patients) with sufficient control of arterial hypertension and II (22 patients) with insufficient control of arterial hypertension during hypertension treatment. We evaluated the level of peroxidation lipid products (expressed as the concentration of malondialdehyde in erythrocytes and in plasma) and the activity of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase) in erythrocytes.
Results There were no statistically significant differences between patients with arterial hypertension and controls, and between 2 groups of patients with arterial hypertension in the lipid peroxidation products concentration and in the activity of catalase and glutathione peroxidase. However, the activity of superoxide dismutase was higher in patients with arterial hypertension. The higher activity of superoxide dismutase was independent from the level of arterial hypertension control and left ventricle hypertrophy.
Conclusions Treatment of arterial hypertension may have influence on the lipid peroxidation products level. The higher activity of superoxide dismutase may be compensatory mechanism, which influence on the concentration of lipid peroxidation products.
