Abstract

This review presents the survey of the chosen reflections on the phenomenon of death as expressed by outstanding philosophers from the various periods, ranging from the antiquity to the contemporary times. Basing on Philippe Ariés’s ("Man and death"), the paper recalls these patterns of death, which are typical for the Christian civilization of the West as well as the ones that appeared in the 20th century together with the medicalization of death. The paper ends with the reflection on the phenomenon of death viewed from the perspective of the sense of Life.
