Effects of prolactin on sexual function in males

Abstract

Data regarding the role of prolactin in sexual function in men are inconsistent. Hyperprolactinemia may be associated with decreased libido and reduced sexual activity. In the elderly and those with erectile dysfunction only a small per cent manifest increase level of prolactin. Hyperprolactinemia occurs with antipsychotics and prolactinoma. In many studies orgasm-dependent pronounced, long-lasting increase in prolactin level in men were observed. Post-orgasmic icrease of prolactin may modulate central nervous system centers controling sexual functions.
