Seksuologia Polska 2006;4(1):1-5.
Abstract
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual
intercourse or activity. The aim of this work is to determine incidence and prevalence and intensity of ED in
hospitalized patients with hypertension, diabetes and dialyzed and treatment evaluation. Actually was
tested 106 patients hospitalized in departments of urology, endocrinology and nephrology University Hospital
in Bydgoszcz. To evaluate ED was used the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) with
additional questions of risk factors (smoking, spinal cord injury, pelvic trauma or surgery, neurologic impairment,
vascular disease) and apply ED treatment and intentions of treatment. The prevalence of ED
among patients was 72.6%. A mean age man with ED was 56.9 years. ED prevalence in diabetes (type 1
and 2) was 70.6%. Mean age was 58.2 years. In diabetes, type 2 ED was more prevalent (84.4%, mean age
58.1 years) than in diabetes type 1 (55%, mean age 58.1 years. Patients with diabetes and hypertension
manifested ED in 86.5%. The prevalence of ED in-group patients with chronic renal failure patients undergoing
dialysis was high — in 83.3% men. Mean age dialyzed patients was 56.2 years. Most patients with
ED wanted to attempt treatment (53.2%), but only 10.4% men with ED have tried pharmacological treatment
at once. Using the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) in men is a method of determine
prevalence and intense of ED.
This study results have shown that patients with diabetes and dialyzed have a high prevalence of ED. Most patients with ED wanted to attempt treatment, but only few percent men with ED tried pharmacological treatment at once.
