Incidence of prostate diseases and analysis sexual function with particulary taken into consideration patients after prostatic biopsy

Abstract

Introduction. The aim of the randomly study was to evaluate sexual function men with benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis and prostate cancer with particulary taken into consideration patients after prostatic biopsy (a standard procedure in patients with suspicion of cancer). The problem of erectile dysfunction is a significant public health problem which observed in men after 40 years old.
Material and methods. Out spontaneous appearance 197 men aged from 40 to 83 (the awerage 60.2) were examined and divided into four groups: A (40-49 age) - 33 (16.8%), B (50-59 age) - 67 (34%), C (60-69 age) - 59 (29.9%), D (above 70 years) - 38 (19.3%). All men fulfilled shortened version of International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) included questions regarding pain during intercourse, hematospermia and assessment of impairment of sexual function.
Results. Erectile dysfunction was diagnosed in 111 (56.4%) of 197 (100%) men which state in Group A - 3 (9%); B - 30 (45%); C - 45 (76%) and D - 33 (87%). Out of 111 pts - as many as 61 men (100%) underwent prostatic biopsy and completed a questionnare IIEF- 5 before, 15 days and 1 month after. CaP was stated in 3 (5%) men from Group D. In last 58 men confirmed benign prostatic hyperplasia in 51 (83%) and prostatitis in 7 (12%). 15 patients reported very soft or no erection before biopsy and 22 after biopsy (7th pts more). Hematospermia was noted in 42 (69%) and in 9 (15%) of the pts reported pain during sexual intercourse 15 days after biopsy. However 45 pts (74%) subiectively did not fell influenced by the biopsy in their sexual function after 1 month.
Conclusions:
1. Sexual function is impaired obiectively in majority of patients after prostatic biopsy.
2. It was confirmed that erectile dysfunction correlate with age -- incidence of erectile dysfunction increases with age.
3. Most of patients (45 men - 74%) assess subiectively that do not feel influenced by the biopsy in their sexual function after one month.
