Pharmacotherapy of diabetes in patients with chronic kidney disease
Abstract
Treating diabetes means keeping a normal and stable blood glucose levels and preventing hypoglycemia. Doing so is especially difficult in patients with diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease because the antidiabetic drugs metabolism may be disturbed by impaired glomerular filtration rate. As a result, the drug action might be diminished and the risk of side effects is increased. Recent years saw a significant progress in pharmacotherapy of diabetes. In this paper we systematize the current knowledge on various treatments with antidiabetic drugs in patients with chronic kidney disease, including those on renal replacement therapy.
