Peritoneal dialysis — what’s new?

Zofia Wańkowicz, Bożena Pietrzak
Forum Nefrologiczne 2014;7(2):81-89.

Abstract

This paper reviews current situation and improvements of the effectiveness of peritoneal dialysis in irreversible renal failure patients with diabetes, based on own clinical experience, as well as data from the literature. Firstly the paper presents both benefits and limitations of glucose only fluids in peritoneal dialysis. Furthermore it discusses the usefulness of monitoring the effectiveness of diabetes treatment using glycated hemoglobin, glycated albumin, and fructosamine. Finally it highlights the new hope which presents itself in the form of so-called glucose sparing regimens — new strategies for the prescription of a daily dose of dialysis in patients with diabetes — generally the worst possible prognosis for irreversible renal failure.
