Abstract

Depression is an essential problem among patients with chronic kidney disease. It is particularly often noticed among patients suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who are being treated with renal replacement therapy. Depression worsens the quality of life and the length of life. A nephrologist’s and a primary care physician’s tasks should be early diagnosis and initial treatment. In case of difficult diagnostics/symptoms and unsuccessful treatment it is necessary that a patient is being given ambulatory treatment or hospital psychiatric treatment. This paper describes a case of a patient with chronic kidney disease receiving peritoneal dialysis, who have revealed symptomps of depression. A proper and fast diagnosis and the applied treatment led to reduction of disease symptoms, enabled the patient to return home and significantly improved the quality of his life.

Fundamental stages of depression diagnosis and potential difficulties among this specific group of patients have also been discussed.
