Depression in patients with chronic kidney disease — practical approach to the treatment
Abstract
Depression and anxiety are common, but under-recognized, and under-treated psychological problems associated with increased morbidity and mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. The reasons include the shortness of data on diagnosis as well as efficacy and safety of treatment in patients with impaired kidney function. Observational studies and few trials suggest that serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors may be safe to use in patients with CKD. Alternative proposed therapies include cognitive behavioral therapy, exercise training programs, music therapyor alternations in dialysis treatment.
In the manuscript the short review of epidemiology, diagnosis and practical approach to the treatment of depression in the patients with chronic kidney disease is presented.
