Abstract

We present 3 cases of candida arteritis in kidney recipients. It is an uncommon but life-threatening complication of kidney transplantation. The most common cause is a contamination of preservation fluid with fungal pathogens from donor's intestine. Early diagnosis is rare as initially symptoms are unspecific and culture from preservation fluid is in most cases negative. Often the first symptom is a sudden arterial rupture what can lead to hemorrhagic shock. We present 3 cases of candida arteritis in kidney transplant recipients. The first reported patient suffered from transplant renal artery thrombosis and subsequent iliac artery rupture. The second recipient presented mycotic pseudoaneurysm of transplant renal artery. The third reported patient suffered from leakage from transplant renal artery anastomosis and rupture of inferior epigastric artery with numerous surgical complications. All presented patients lost transplanted kidneys and returned to hemodialysis.
