The relationship between job burnout and secondary traumatic stress among nurses working in palliative care

Abstract

Introduction: Job burnout and secondary traumatic stress are the main consequences of the experienced stress at
work in people who help victims of trauma or those who suffer. The research was aimed at checking whether there is a
link between job burnout and secondary traumatic stress. It was also analyzed which burnout components are predictors
of secondary traumatic stress and which symptoms of secondary traumatic stress allow for prediction of burnout.

Material and methods: The results obtained from 132 nurses, aged 22–72 years (M = 46.01, SD = 10.69) working
in palliative care were analyzed. A survey and two standard measurement tools, i.e. the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory
(Olbi) and the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS) were used in the study.

Results: The obtained results confirmed a positive relationship between job burnout and secondary traumatic stress
in the examined group of nurses. It has also been shown that the main predictor of secondary traumatic stress is the
disengagement from work, and the predictor of burnout is avoidance.

Conclusions: Job burnout, especially its component which is disengagement from work, seems to increase the risk of
other negative consequences of job stress, including the symptoms of secondary traumatic stress.
