Abstract

Treatment of depression is a process that consists of several elements. These include: psychotherapeutic and psychoactive effects, but the basis is pharmacological treatment, especially in the acute phase of depression and its severe symptoms. Anxiety, which is associated to depression, as well as cognitive impairment or psychomotor slowdown and lack of energy, make other forms of therapeutic effects impossible to use. The 90s of the 20th century introduced new antidepressants, which are much safer than tricyclic drugs. It means also raising awareness that such a disease like depression exists, both among doctors as well as patients and their relatives. All this has led to the fact that treatment has become universal, accessible and appropriate for the needs of different groups of patients - depending on age, clinical picture of depression or coexisting diseases. In this article, the author provides practical guidance on the use of selected antidepressant (LPD) and anxiolytic drugs, supporting them with descriptions of clinical cases.
