The characteristics of psychodynamic psychotherapy directed at persons diagnosed with schizophrenia. Qualitative research based on interviews with psychotherapists

Abstract

Introduction: Psychotherapists oriented psychodynamically and psychoanalytically are the largest group of therapists that conduct therapy for psychotic patients in Poland, and there are numerous investigations that indicate efficiency of psychodynamic psychotherapy. The aim of this research is to define the characteristics of psychodynamic work with psychotic patients based on experiences of psychotherapists.

Material and methods: The research was carried out by semi-structured interview conducted on the group of 16 psychodynamic psychotherapists.

Results: In opinion of all psychotherapists, psychodynamic psychotherapy directed at psychotic patients differs significantly from work with patients with other diagnoses. The most frequently declared differences concerned greatest importance of therapeutic relation, more elastic setting and less confronting style of work. Participants also described their methods of working with positive and negative symptoms.

Conclusions: There is a distinct specifics of psychodynamic work with psychotic patients. Gathered data enable an insight into the way in which psychodynamic therapists adjust their methods to the needs of the patients with schizophrenia diagnosis.
