Abstract

Over the past decades we systematically observe change in the structure of the population. The progress of medical science leads to a growing recognition of diseases, better pharmacotherapy and possibilities to treat the disorders that previously were considered incurable. The extension of life duration in combination with a reduction in birth rates leads to a gradual increase in the elderly population. Greater availability of medical knowledge, information about drugs, access to various specialists and the number of new medicines, largely without a prescription, increase the risk of polypharmacy and its associated risks. In the population of the elderly most often abused are hypnotics and sedatives (including benzodiazepines), alcohol and painkillers. This article presents the guidelines to be followed to ensure the elderly patients an effective treatment for pain, at the same time minimizing the risk of dangerous interactions and addiction.
