Abstract

The present review focuses on personality disorders and personality characteristics of patients with eating disorders (ED). Personality disorders are common in that group of patients, particulary from cluster B and C of the DSM IV. The categorical approaches are inconsistent because of the methodological limitations and conceptual problems. The multidimensional methods measuring personality features as continouus entites seems to be more clear and promising. High Harm Avoidance, perfectionism and low Self-Directedness are reported as predictive to ED. Bulimic patients are highest in Novelity Seeking and impulsivity. The multidimentional approach confirms the hypothesis of spectrum of ED.
