Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive inflammatory-demyelinating disease of the central nervous system of vague origin. MS has been reported in association with several psychiatric manifestations. The paper presents a case of a 56-year-old female patient with a 7-year history of MS who was admitted for the first time to the psychiatric unit with a manic episode. The author hypothesises that the manic episode was induced with the antidepressive drug fluoxetine. The paper emphasises the importance of systematic assessment of the depressive symptoms in relation to the risk of misdiagnosis and the associated drug misuse. A satisfactory remission of manic episode was achieved with olanzapine 10 mg/d. Medication was well tolerated. The patient was discharged after 15 days of therapy.
