Abstract

Background. In recent years a lot of psychological factors have been considered a risk factors for coronary artery disease. Studies show that type D personality is related to depression, social alternation, a higher number of reinfarction and higher mortality rates. The construct was developed in Belgian cardiac patients, but little is known about its applicability in other nationalities. The objectives of the present article were to cross-validate the Type D Personality Scale-14 (DS14) in Polish sample of patients with a first myocardial infarction.
Material and methods. The battery of self-administered instruments were given to 50 patients with a first myocardial infarction; 4 week to 6 months post infarction.
Results. The two-factor structure of the DS14 and the internal consistency of the Negative Affectivity (α = 83) and Social Inhibition (α = 63) subscales were confirmed. The construct validity of the DS14 was confirmed against scales that measure similar construct. Conclusions. These finding indicate that the Type D construct is equally applicable in Polish patients with coronary artery disease.
