Abstract

Introduction. Aging is a natural process of decreasing the organism’s biological activity as years pass by. A genetic factor, which above all conditions the lifespan, plays an important role in this process. The greatest value at the time of senility is health composed of the mutual correlations between psychic and somatic factors. Depending on the attitude towards ourselves and others, on life balance (that is a subjective evaluation of an entire life), on the feeling of control (that is our influence on the fate), aging can be related with a physiological slowdown of movements, an increased vulnerability to various deseases or decreptitude and multiple pathology.
Material and methods. The research included 316 women and 120 men in their 60’s. The correlations of psychic and somatic variables have been evaluated with reference to women and men.
Results and conclusions. The results of the research show that the negative attitude towards oneself is the most important psychic factor correlating with the somatic factors. This attitude is connected to the greater vulnerability to deseases and the slowdown of movements.
