Abstract

Introduction. According to the holistic health model - stress resistance resources (SRR) are being recognized as an essential factor that modify the negative stress consequences, which are caused by an illness and have the impact not only on the quality of experience of disease but also for the recovery process. This study examines the value of two SRRs (general self-efficacy and social support) in the recovery process of patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) who had participated in complex cardiac rehabilitation.
Material and methods.15 patients after PTCA and 15 patients after CABG took part in 4 weeks cardiac rehabilitation. Participants were administered individually. General Self-Efficacy Scale; Berlin Social Support Scales; Multimensional Health Locus of Control Scale Polish version by and Acceptance of Illness Scale.
Results. In our study we found that patients with ischemic heart disease (after PTCA/ CABG) who participated in cardiac rehabilitation in sanatorium were characterized by high level of general self-efficacy and high level of social support in terms of: perceived available support, need for support and support seeking. We observed greater external locus of control and lower level of illness acceptance at the beginning of cardiac rehabilitation than at the end, in patients after CABG. These patients who had undergone CABG imputed lower income of chance on their health and higher level of illness acceptance at the end of cardiac rehabilitation than at the beginning.
Conclusions. Results let us to define the accessibility and utility of SRR in the recovery process of patients with IHD participating in cardiac rehabilitation. In the recovery process of patients beside predictors of health behavior in sort of self-efficacy and social support vital meaning have health beliefs ranged health locus of control and acceptance of illness which are being modify by kind of cardiac treatment and the stage of rehabilitation.
