Abstract

Introduction. The article presents Polish version of the Impact Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) developed by Weiss and Marmar. Items correspond directly to the DSM-IV symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Material and methods. Impact Event Scale-Revised is a self-report measure that assesses subjective distress caused by traumatic events. The IES-R was administered to a sample of 370 persons, which experienced traumatic events.
Results. The IES-R in Polish version was found to be reliable and valid method. The factor structure is similar to the proposed theoretical structure. Principal component analysis was identified 3 factors (Intrusion, Hyperarousal, and Avoidance), which explained 66% of total variance. The current normative data on this version of the IES are presented.
Conclusions. The obtained results suggests that IES-R is useful as a brief screen for posttraumatic stress. In clinical application the scale should be used only for a preliminary diagnosis of PTSD.
