Abstract

The investigation of causes affecting development, course and managements of depressive disorder have been investigated for many years. The widely investigated monoaminergic theory of depression does not explained all the etiology what is confirmed by the partial inefficiency of the antidepressants affecting monoaminergic system. Long lasting examination of the background of depression resulted in the conclusion finding the disease as heterogenic, for the course of which many disturbances of many processes are important. Recently and widely investigated process characteristic for at least some group of patients diagnosed with unipolar depression is inflammation and activation of immune cells. Some data have found increased level of pro-inflammatory cytokines, acute phase protein or enzymes such as cyclooxygenase -2 of patients with depression. An anti-inflammatory mechanism of antidepressants and effectiveness of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs in depression treatment are also observed. In this paper, we present and review information helpful in the explanation and understanding of the importance of inflammatory pathway in the development of depressive symptoms. The paper also emphasizes the possible use of anti-inflammatory drugs in depression treatments.
