Abstract

Von Willebrand disease (VWD), the most common inherited bleeding disorder, is caused by quantitative or qualitative von Willebrand factor (vWF) deficiency. Three types of are distinguished: type 1 (quantitative), type 2 (qualitative) and type 3(severe type; complete absence of vWF). Diagnostics of VWD is based on clinical evaluation and laboratory tests (screening tests, initial tests and specialist tests). Physiologic variability of vWF and factor VIII levels (acute phase proteins) can sometimes hamper the diagnosis, especially of type 1 VWD, and makes repeated testing necessary. Access to specialist laboratory and full range of diagnostic is of utmost importance.
