Abstract

Accelerated heart rate is a risk factor of general and cardiovascular mortality in different populations. The classical treatment to achieve heart rate reduction by beta-blockers and calcium channel antagonists from the group of nondihydropyridines (verapamil and diltiazem), is often limited by contraindications or adverse reactions. Ivabradine is a unique, modern drug which mechanism of action is blocking the If current in the sinoatrial node. This translates into a reduction in heart rate — a parameter associated with poor prognosis in patients with heart failure (HF). The following document contains the opinion of an expert group summarizing current knowledge on ivabradine and its use in population of patients with HF.
