Abstract

Wave intensity (WI) analysis is a technique of global assessment of cardiovascular function. Wave intensity is a product of blood velocity and pressure measured over short time intervals. Integrated ultrasonographic systems enable noninvasive analysis of WI along with vascular stiffness parameters. Wave intensity parameters provide information on heart systolic and diastolic performance, local arterial flow conditions and peripheral resistance, thus allowing evaluation of ventriculo-arterial coupling. In this paper, we present review of publications concerning theoretical aspects, methods of measurements and clinical application of wave intensity analysis.
