Abstract

Astaxanthin, the substance belonging to the carotenoids, can be found in the tissues of many aquatic animals and its richest source is algae Haematococcus pluvialis. Since its isolation, lots of researches have been performed that reported possible applications of astaxanthin as a therapeutic agent. Astaxanthin’s positive impact on the functioning of such systems in the human body as the cardiovascular system, nervous system, bones and joints, and endocrine system has been proven as well as its usefulness as ananticancer agent and a factor that protects against obesity and premature aging of the skin. Therapeutic potential of astaxanthin results from its extremely strong antioxidative action, which is much stronger than that of popular antioxidants such as vitamin C, E or beta-carotene. This article aims to present the potential clinical significance of astaxanthin with particular emphasis on the impacton the function of the endocrine system.
