Abstract

Body composition (BC) analysis in humans is an important way to assess the nutritional status of particular individuals and whole population. It plays a crucial role in the assessment of adipose tissue content in subjects suffering from inappropriate nutrition (obesity, starvation, cachexia) and in the course of some hormonal disorders when changes in adipose tissue are present. The theoretical background, methods of BC studies and their results related to the age and selected hormonal dysfunctions are discussed. Special emphasis was given to contemporary BC methods available in daily clinical practice: bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).
