Who may become a victim of anorexia nervosa? Analysis of own’s group

Abstract

INTRODUCTION. The aim of the study was to find reasons of occurrence and development of anorexia nervosa.
MATERIAL AND METHODS. A questionnaire study was provided among 26 patients, who were treated at Department of Endocrinology For Children and Adolescents in Wroclaw.
RESULTS. The major reason of starting loosing weight was lost of physical appearance acceptation (72%). Family conflicts, as a possible reason, indicated 28% of parents and 32% of children. 88% of children used food limitation and counting calories and 65% intensive exercise to loose weight. Only 4 patients looked for a medical help. 36% didn’t continue psychotherapy after leaving the Clinic.
CONCLUSIONS. 1. The most of patients with anorexia nervosa are girls between 13-16 years who live in city with whole family in good social conditions and whose patents are well educated and job active. Girls have no problems at school but they are not accept their physical appearence.
2. The children of better educated parents visited a doctor earlier than children of worse educated parents.
3. Children from the country continue psychotherapy more often than children from the city.
