Abstract

More than 20 years ago, it has been shown that some non-obese persons have metabolic disorders which normally occur among people with visceral obesity. It has been identified as Metabolically Obese Normal-Weight (MONW). The cause of this phenomenon has not been elucidated till now, and there was not created a satisfactory definition of MONW or strictly defined diagnostic criteria of this disorder.
Among patients with MONW, the increased amount of adipose tissue is collected in abdominal part. It is associated with lower sensibility of tissues to insulin, hyperinsulinemia, atherogenic lipid profile and higher arterial blood pressure. MONW patients are more likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. A diet and increased physical activity can improve metabolic profile. In some cases it is also suggested to use fibrats. Early identification of MONW people may be of great practical value.
