Abstract

INTRODUCTION. The phenomenon of binge eating frequently accompanies obesity. The aim of this study was to confirm if there is any relationship between binge eating and interrupting of body weight loss therapy in outpatient treatment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS. 73 patients (58 women and 15 men; 45.8 ± 14.9 years old; BMI = 39.7 ± 7.23 kg/m2) on admission to Obesity and Metabolic Disorders Outpatient Clinic in Katowice answered four questions concerning the presence and some features of binge eating. After ten months the treatment course was verified (interruption of treatment, number of visits).
RESULTS. Mean number of visits in the whole group was 3.6 ± 2.6. The presence of binge eating symptoms was reported by 75% of the whole group. There was no relationship between binge eating and BMI or number of visits, however women reported more frequent binges than men, when in bad mood (p < 0.01). Patients with BMI > 40 kg/m2 reported less control over eating comparing to patients with BMI < 34.9 kg/m2.
CONCLUSIONS. The termination of body weight loss therapy was not correlated with occurrence of binge eating. The greater obesity, the less control the patients had over eating.
