Abstract

The results of current research into the significance of the fat mass and obesity associated gene (FTO) polymorphisms in the development of obesity were shown. Recent examinations showed a strong associations with polymorphisms of this gene and obesity traits, expressed by body mass index or waist circumference, food intake and both leptin and adiponectin level. Some researches indicate there is a strong link between carriers of risk allele of the FTO gene and metabolic factors as insulin sensitivity, glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol level. The clear association of gene FTO SNPs and physical activity wasn’t showed. The FTO, as obesity-susceptibility gene, increases the risk of obesity. The results underline, that apart from too high-calorie diet and reduced energy expenditure, the obesity has also a complex genetic ground.
