Abstract

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a very common endocrinopathy with a heterogeneous presentation whose etiology is still uncertain. It appears in about 10% women of reproductive age. The criteria of PCOS take account of the broad spectrum of presenting features of PCOS, including women with menstrual disturbance, signs of androgen excess. PCOS is common of its heterogeneity. The prevalence of obesity, disturbances of lipid profile, diabetes mellitus type 2, impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance in women with PCOS is higher than in normal population. Definition of PCOS has been evaluated through the years, but still although having better diagnostic tools there is doubt if actual definition is complete.
