Abstract

INTRODUCTION. The aim of the study is the assessment of energy balance of tourist resting in selected farm tourism centers in Nowy Sącz district.
MATERIAL AND METHODS. Thirty six subjects (21 women and 15 men) were enrolled to the study. The average daily calorie consumption was calculated on the basis of weekly menu of selected farm tourism centers in Nowy Sącz district using calories table prepared by National Food and Nutrition Institute in Warsaw. Resting energy expenditure was calculated on the basis of Harrison-Benedict formula. Energy expenditure connected with physical activity was assessed on the basis of pedometer records, obtained during a hike on the Krościenko–Sokolica–Trzy Korony–Krościenko route (distance 15 km, moderate speed march, duration 5 hours and 30 minutes). The obtained data were used for the energy balance calculation.
RESULTS. The daily calorie consumption was 2768 ± 349 kcal (breakfast 816 ± 175 kcal, dinner 1167 ± 225 kcal, supper 785 ± 83 kcal). The mean resting metabolic rate was 1406 ± 81 for women and 1731 ± 62 kcal/day for man. The mean energy expenditure during the hike was 809 ± 195 kcal (702 ± 145 women, 958 ± 156 kcal men). Both women and men had positive energy balance, 660 ± 205 kcal and 79 ± 65 kcal, respectively.
CONCLUSIONS. High-calorie meals offered by the agro-tourism centers especially in women causes a significant positive energy balance, even with intense long-term physical activity.
