Abstract

INTRODUCTION. Metabolic syndrome (MS) remains worldwide health problem due to changes in life style of modern societies. The MS occurrence is related with the presence of visceral fat tissue assessed by the waist measurement. The aim of the study was to assess the presence of disturbances typical for MS in a group of men.
MATERIAL AND METHODS. A total 402 males, aged 30–60 years were analyzed. The anthropometric measures and biochemical analyses typical for MS were utilized. Criteria required for MS according to International Diabetes Foundation were shown in 180 (44.78%) subjects studied.
RESULTS. The results indicate significant risk of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity-related diseases. More than half of subjects had abnormal laboratory results. Hence, increasing incidence of MS makes important the dissemination of the MS awareness and proper attitude, both among the clinicians and the patient.
CONCLUSIONS. Metabolic syndrome was documented in almost half of male subjects studied. In men with MS the abnormal results of biochemical parameters connected with atherosclerosis and diabetes mellitus were much more often.
