Erectile disfunction in diabetes

Abstract

Diabetes is neither the unique nor the most frequent cause of erectile impotence. Erectile disfunction in diabetes develops in 28-59% of patients. The causes of erectile disfunction in diabetes are: diabetic neuropathy, micro- and macroangiopathy, inflammatory status or psychogenic factors. The most effective menagement is prophylaxis of erectile disturbances achiving the ideal diabetes compensation. Less effective and more difficult methods of treatment of impotence like injections, intraurethral suppositoria or prosthesis were replaced mostly by sildenafil. This drug acting by 5hosphodiesterase blockade induces better utilize of nitric oxide in penile vessels. The efficacy of sildenafil in diabetes is about 70%. Introducing of sildenafil improves undoubtedly the quality of life of diabetic patients.
