Abstract

In spite of a great progress concerning treatment of diabetes, long-term complications are steel an important clinical problem. Microangiopathy refer to diabetic-specific microvascular alterations, clinically appeared as retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy. The aim of this review was to provide the history of research on the pathogenesis of microangiopathy. The development of these complications in diabetic patients was noticed in XIX century. However, late diabetic complications became a clinical and social problem after the discovery of insulin by Frederick Banting and Charles Best in the year 1921. Clinical observations as well as experimental investigations concerning pathogenesis of microangiopathy are presented in our paper.
