Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a progressive disease requiring multiple treatment regimens. To secure good glycaemic control insulin needs to be introduced when oral antidiabetic drugs fail. When starting insulinotherapy there are several questions to be answered: what kind of insulin is optimal for the patient and which one is the most effective and safe. Another important aspect is quality of life meaning convenient insulinotherapy assuring high compliance. In the following article we attempt to asses which of the following insulin treatment regimens: long acting insulin analogue or biphasic insulin analogue is optimal for starting insulinotherapy in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
