Cardioprotective effect of metformin at patients with diabetes type 2

Roman Kuczerowski
Diabetologia Praktyczna 2009;10(4):136-142.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is one of the pivotal risk factors of early onset, multifocal atherosclerosis and its clinical manifestation. Multifactorial management may cause the inhibition of this process. Treatment with metformin leads to outstanding results in terms of reduction of cardiovascular deaths, risk of myocardial infarction and total mortality. This therapeutic effect is associated not only with decrease of blood glucose level but also with multifactorial activity of metformin. Beneficial effects of metformin are confirmed in group of diabetic patients without clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis, with coronary heart disease, after myocardial infarction and even with congestive heart failure.
