open access
Abstract
Prediabetes is one of the most powerful risk factor for diabetes development. Prediabetes nowadays is treated as a separate clinical entity, and it is widely acknowledged that it requires both lifestyle modification and pharmacotherapy. Cardiovascular disease as well as microvascular complications of diabetes (mostly polyneuropathy and retinopathy) are frequently found in prediabetes. Also, individuals with prediabetes are at higher risk of the development of cardiovascular disease. In the last few years Diabetes Poland have been recommending metformin to be used in subjects with concomitant impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance. Since July 2014 metformin use in prediabetes has been licensed throughout Poland.
