Diabetic gastroparesis: do you know how to recognize and effectively treat?

Abstract

Gastroparesis is a condition characterized with clinical symptoms resulting from neurological and hormonal disturbances leading to failure in normal gastric motility. Most often these abnormalities are caused by long lasting uncontrolled hyperglycemia. In gastoparesis, symptoms from upper intestinal tract, as well as weight loss and hypoglycemic episodes of unknown origin may occur. Diagnostic problems are usually the consequence of a broad spectrum of symptoms and necessity to exclude other conditions in differential diagnosis. Therapeutic approach in patients with diabetic gastroparesis is a challenge and require cooperation of many specialists, as also a good relation with patient. The aim of this review is to provide a practical guidelines of diagnostic and therapeutic approach in clinical practice.
