Abstract

The aim of this article is to describe mechanisms of metformin action and advantages of its use in otherindications than type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes, metabolic syndrome are not mild disorders and there is a need for action to prevent or delay diagnosis of diabetes in future. Modification of lifestyle is of key importance, however it is rarely implemented with success by patients. In such cases use of metformin should be considered. This drug for many years is used in treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome. By reduction of insulin resistance and secondary hyperinsulinemia in patients with PCOS metformin diminishes androgenesis in ovaries.
