Painful diabetic polyneuropathy — diagnostics and treatment possibilities

Abstract

Painful diabetic polyneuropathy is a serious therapeuticproblem of contemporary diabetology. Neuropathic pain associated with complication significantlydecreases quality of patients’ life. The goal isto achieve and maintain accurate glicemic control inthe treatment of diabetes since it has been provedthat hyperglycemia is the main cause of diabeticneuropathy. The achievement of accurate glycemiccontrol leads to pain reduction. In the majority ofcases the use of analgesics and coanalgesics is essential.There are also drugs that are suggested toact on the “cause”. The treatment of polyneuropathyis unfortunately not always effective. The aim ofthis article is to review diagnostic criteria for diabeticneuropathy and current therapeutic possibilities.(Diabet.
