Abstract

Introduction: The treatment procedures in early laryngeal cancers (Tis and T1) are focused on surgery (laser or external cordectomy) or radiotherapy. Due to the advantages and disadvantages of all above mentionted methods, the way of treatment is indicated individually for each patient. The aim of the study was to analyse the treatment results of the patients with laryngeal cancer treated by conventional and laser surgery.
Material and methods: 47 patients (4 female and 43 male) in age from 39 to 72 (mean 54) operated in ENT Department Silesian Medical Academy in Zabrze in period from 1992 to 1998 underwent the analysis. 31 patients underwent conventional and 16 patients laser cordectomy. The results were compared on the basis of at least 3 years lastiong follow-up. The survival rate and the local recurrence rate were taken into account.
Results: the 3 years survival rate after conventional cordectomy among 31 patients was 80% and local recurrence rate 9,6%. In 16 patients after laser cordectomy the survival rate was 81% and local recurrence rate 6,5%. No significant difference was found in comparison those results in both groups using c2 . Discussion: The high value of both surgical procedures in early laryngeal cancers was emphasized and the laser procedure advantages were indicated
