Surgical treatment of venous diseases and injuries located in lower limbs over a span of history

Abstract
Venous diseases accompanied mankind from the dawn of history. Through the ages, the most famous
physicians worked on this problem. However, the most significant breakthrough in treatment of varicose
veins of lover limbs, postphlebitic syndrome and insufficiency of venous valves, was made in the last
century and is connected with comprehension of pathophysiology of veins, as well as with great progress
in medicine in the 20th century. In this article, we describe the most frequent surgical procedures performed
on venous system, taking history into special consideration and familiarize readers with the most
recent trends in phlebological surgery. We hope that this article will let the reader recall some forgotten
information, and will also show some of the newest trends in surgical treatment of venous diseases.
