Abstract

Societies, especially in well-developed countries, are growing old, a fact which challenges their health services. A specific dimension has appeared regarding surgery with the number of necessary surgical interventions significantly increasing in patients aged sixty five years and older. In this article the authors try to analyze the possibilities of safe operative treatment in this group of patients. At the same time, one must take note doubts regarding the value of chronological age as a decisive factor in qualification and preparation for surgery.
